I just received Minna Ora’s new single “Rock” and I can’t stop thinking about it. This is her seventh solo release, and there’s something about this one that just gets under your skin.
The whole song is built around this one line: “I will stand right beside you just like a rock.” Sounds simple, right? But the way she delivers it hits way harder than you’d think. Her vocals are intense without being overdone, and they sit perfectly on top of these deep bass lines that you feel in your gut. The drums have this rhythm that makes your foot start tapping before you even realize it, and those guitar riffs? They come in sharp and grab your attention every single time.
What really got me though is what the song is actually about. Minna’s asking this question we’ve all wondered: is there anything stable left anymore when everything around us keeps changing? Fair question, honestly.
The way I hear it, she’s talking to someone about to step out into the real world. Maybe it’s her kid, maybe it’s all of us at some point. That moment when you need someone to look you in the eye and promise you’ll be okay. Some of us had that. Some of us are still looking for it.
But she’s also looking back, thanking whoever gave her that foundation when she needed it. The whole message boils down to something pretty straightforward: love what makes you happy, love yourself, but know when to draw the line.
The music video is worth watching too. They got Finnish actresses Outi Mäenpää and Ella Valanne in it, and it takes you back to when things were simpler. No screens, no constant connection to everything and everyone. Just people actually showing up for each other because that was the only option. The video reminds you that even back then, what people needed most was to belong somewhere, to have someone count on them and pass that sense of stability forward. Times change, but people really don’t.
If you understand Finnish, there’s also a version called “Kallio” that dropped on October 3rd. “Rock” is streaming everywhere now. Give it a listen.
