I just listened to “Be Free” by Dublin’s Von Venn, and I have to say, this one really got to me.
It’s their third single from the upcoming album “Forgetting the Fall”, and where “You Can Talk To Me” and “Only In The Night” set the stage, this track takes things somewhere different. There’s weight to it, but not in a way that drags you down. Actually, it’s the opposite.
The whole song is about thinking for yourself. Not letting anyone tell you what’s real or what you should believe. The band talks about how much spin and manipulation we’re drowning in these days, how information gets twisted until you don’t know what’s genuine anymore. They wrote this as a push back against all that. A reminder to question things and make up your own mind instead of getting played.
But here’s what I love: they could have made this heavy and preachy, but they didn’t. It feels good. Really good. There’s this throwback rock vibe running through it that reminds me of bands I grew up listening to, but it’s not stuck in the past. It sounds fresh, modern even. Gary Cox’s vocals really carry it. His performance has this staying power where you find yourself humming it hours later.
The lyrics don’t mess around. “Somebody’s watching you, got to keep watching you, checking what you’ve got to say, got to be sure that everybody’s thinking is right.” Then that chorus hits and you’re moving whether you meant to or not: “We should be free, say what we want, put it out to hear, tell anyone.”
There’s real frustration in there, maybe some anger too, but also something hopeful. It’s not just complaining about the state of things. It’s reminding you that your voice matters, that you can still speak up. And somehow they managed to wrap all of that into something that just makes you want to crank it up loud.
This one’s worth your time.
